I remember the first time my ears hurt at an Iron Butterfly concert. What did I learn from that? Not much, as I kept going to other loud concerts. Workplace noise exposure didn't help.

50+ years later I'm ready for hearing aids. Tests by audiologists and the freebie at Sam's all demonstrate the expected high frequency hearing loss. (I was impressed with the speech discrimination tests at Sam's.) Noisy restaurants are a problem for conversation. The tinnitus I've had for years masks a lot that I would otherwise hear but it doesn't drive me crazy like it does some people.

Being a long-time CPAP user I've benefited from the expert users at CPAPTalk.com. I figured there was a similar group of smart and helpful people who can provide advice about hearing aids and found this site.

I suspect that high-end hearing aids are pretty sophisticated, but perhaps the incremental improvement over decent mid-grade hearing aids does not justify the significant increase in cost. Any guidance I can get here is appreciated. Are there some sticky topics I should read?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Chris

New AI-DNN (Artificial Intelligence - Deep Neural network) technology/new-chip can help with that.

I'm unclear what to do with that information. What is the recommended approach to choosing hearing aids? I see some posts here with audiograms(?). If I get one and post it (my tests were some time ago), what do participants here do with that? What new information will I learn here, from providing that information?

What is the recommended approach to choosing hearing aids?
There is no recommended approach for choosing hearing aids, except maybe choose Power BTE hearing aids for a profound hearing loss. For a milder hearing loss, choose RICs or some like Custom ITEs/CICs and such.

Your audiogram defines your hearing loss so it helps with discussion, for example there is no need to discuss Power BTE hearing aids for a mild loss.

  • Visit an Audiologist (they are expensive),
  • Visit Costco.
