    Good advice; thanks @pvc I think there must have been a problem with the firmware. I re-updated it a couple of times & it's working now.

    USB cable looks good. I tried another cable (USB A-B, but w/o the EMI filters/ferrite chokes), with the same result: Genie can detect the Noahlink but not communicate with it.
