Hearing aid for elderly?

My father who, I hate to say is forgetting more then he is remembering is in desperate need of new hearing aids. His old ones are the Costco phonak with the com pilot etc. he does fine with those because he has used those for 6+ years. He is currently trying a pair of starkey (don’t remember the model) but he hates them, complains about them, we make a list and get them adjusted several times a week etc…. They have this fancy setting that he doesn’t even try to use, he doesn’t even try to use a phone with them (has enough trouble with his phone without any apps)

he has severe hearing loss so he needs some powerful ha. Is there something out there similar to what he has? Or easy to use? And with the amount I have to take him to the audiologist I’m contemplating buying online and doing it all myself. (Audi is 45 min away)

What style of hearing aid is he wearing? Link to → BTE or RIC

Out where?? There are various markets?? You Audiologist? Used and (sometimes maybe new?) on EBay and such. Craigslist? Foreign markets? Careful with used Rechargeable bricks because dead batteries are not replaceable.
 
His current phonak are BTE's

By out there I mean new.. I've been currently looking online and called directhearing.com and talked to them (is online a good idea?? I have to take him to appointments anyway. his home is 100' away vs 45 min drive each way) Not ebay/used.. looking at new reputable.

Each manufacturer makes a BTE model. The Newest has the AI-DNN (Deep Neural Network) noise reduction chip, for example the → New ReSound Enzo IA Super Power model with AI Noise Reduction

I don't know/think that other manufacturers have included the AI-DNN (Deep Neural Network) noise reduction chip in their BTEs which are usually the last model to be updated to current technology.
 
that is the truth... I had no idea about HA's. I've been researching online sellers and attempting to decide if I want to chance going that route for him. on one hand, I won't have to drive him 45 minutes each way, but with online purchase no brick and mortar to go to..

If it were my father, I would start with Costco. They sell only premium level hearing aids which are rebranded aids from the major companies so as not to be direct competitors with local clinics. If you have the software you may want to tweak them later. You can take advantage of Costco’s extremely generous return period.
 
Why reinvent the wheel: If he has been using Phonak and he is happy with Phonak, stay with Phonak.
He can use his current accessories with current Phonaks. Costco has the Sennheiser, which is a rebadged Phonak and they are also compatible with Phonak accessories. You can transfer the programming from the old aids to the new aids if his hearing has not changed. This will make things very easy for him. No need to teach him how to deal with a different product.
One thing I've learned is that our elderly do not like change and prefer what they are used to.
