I am a long-time Phonak user now trying Oticon. I read many favourable posts about Oticon and so far I prefer them to Phonak.
Due to circumstances I have acquired a pair of Opn 2 and a pair of Real 3. Sense tells me that the Reals are the ones that I “should” prefer but I find myself undecided. The Real 3 is a lower level of tech than the Opn 2 but I haven’t noticed it. (My listening environments are quite simple). The Real is 3 generations ahead of the Opn but does this make the Opn obsolete. The Real has a t-coil which I don’t need. The Real has better feedback management.
Is there any good reason not to stay with the Opn or will I find that they quickly become obsolete?

Difficult to say because of splitting hairs by comparing different technology levels (2 vs 3). Yes, the Real 1's are better technology than Opn1's and "she" is wearing the Real 1's today after wearing the Opn 1's. The Real 1's were noticeability better for her hearing. There are technical documents available for each of the levels (1's, 2's, 3's) and each of the models. But it will be tedious to walk through and compare each of the differences.

I don't want to do it; Again. But you can.:p For starters, Use the help feature of Genie. It contains a Search feature that can lead to a huge amount amount of technical documentation. Also; this suggested reading below from two DIY School Legacy Hearing Aids (v2.2) PDF Files;

  • Fitting Instructions Oticon Genie2; Real-More-Own
Also, here's a clip from a DIY School Hearing Aids (v2.2) PDF File named (Big-5 Platforms/New Chips) which may help to put various technology platforms into perspective;

I went from OPN S1 to Real1 HAs because my left OPN S1 HA was having a bluetooth issue (dropped in and out and HA would reboot on it's own). Reasons I didn't upgrade to the Intent were: 1. Price - I bought a pair of used Real1's for $511 off Ebay when the Intent's are over $2000, 2. I have an extra charger and speakers that work with the Real1's, but probably wouldn't for the Intent. Bottom line the Real1's are definitely an upgrade with a cleaner (clearer) sound over the OPN S1's. Also, two way phone calls using my iPhone is a bonus.

Genie 2 was able to transfer all my OPN S1 settings to the Real1 HAs so all I had to do was accept some of the new features recommended settings and save.

My only minor issue is that I have my charger plugged into a smart outlet that turns off after 3 hours. My OPN S1's would automatically startup so batteries didn't sit at 100% for too long. The Real1's turn off so I have to turn then on in the morning. Because of this I moved the charging time to minimize the time they sit at 100% (which is not good on the batteries).
