First off, in my estimation you have shown saintly patience with the many clueless and often mildly imperative requests I see on the forum here. I am sorry to have broken that patience with you, thinking I am in idiot….being in software development my entire career until recently retired, I know a lot about customer support, and what you are doing here is fantastic, especially with no recompense, so thank you again. And because of my previous request to you, I now have the Widex GPS Compass software.
Anyway - two things are now true - I am able get to the files in the portals AND I know how to reliably have the link on HaT to the portals fail using the latest Safari on MacOs.
Only after trying a bunch of crap and changing browsers did I find out that Firefox works fine whether I am logged in to DB or not, and can go right to the portal page from the links on HaT. As you stated, you don’t need a login to get to it. Who’s to blame? Who knows but I suspect DropBox (DB)…doesn't matter, I'll document it here in case someone like myself has the same problem.
TLDR: Normally I use Safari, and when this happened and I still couldn’t get to the portal page, even after your last message. So I removed any Safari extensions, and also tried using private windows in case there was some other factor complicating things, but to no avail. Clicking through to the portal from the link on HaT using Safari would not get me to the files. But I had to dig in to figure this out and here is the Safari issue — when clicking through to the portal page from HaT and NOT signed in to DB, the files in your portal directory flash up for brief microsecond, then a screen pops up that wants to force you to either create an account OR login stating:
“To keep DIY School Hearing Aids (v2.2) secure, we need to confirm your identity”
There is literally NO WAY to get off that page without signing in or creating a new account. Since I have an account(x2), I dutifully logged in. Then after logging in, instead of the file list a screen shows with a button that says “REQUEST ACCESS you don’t have access to this content. You are signed in as….”. And you know the result of that, several times. If I am already logged in to DB, when I click the portal link on HaT, it takes me right to the ‘REQUEST ACCESS” page.
To make it work in Safari, whether I am logged in or not, if I simply copy the portal link from the HaT page, and literally paste it into the browser address bar, it works(!)…I have no idea why but I suspect when clicking on the HaT site and the request goes to DB to load the page, they are looking at the referral info that says the request for the link was ‘using safari’ and is a referral (i.e not direct), so for some 'reason' they show the “login or signup’ page. Happens every time for me (and maybe still only me) in Safari. Firefox, no problem.
Of course this may all disappear tomorrow if DB updates something for some reason…or Safari…I have no freakin’ idea really.
Good godz, that was painful. But again, and sincerely, THANK YOU.
